E-Waste Management
E-Waste Management
Electronic waste, or e-waste, refers to electronic products that have become unwanted, non-working, or obsolete and have reached the end of their useful life.
As per the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016, e-waste is defined as electrical and electronic equipment, whole or in part, discarded as waste by consumers or bulk consumers, including rejects from manufacturing, refurbishment, and repair processes.
E-waste contains valuable and recoverable materials such as aluminium, copper, gold, silver, plastics, and ferrous metals. Recycling and reusing these materials helps conserve natural resources and reduces the energy required to manufacture new electronic products.
E-waste also contains hazardous substances such as mercury, lead, cadmium, beryllium, chromium, and chemical flame retardants, which can leach into soil and water if not disposed of properly.
Benefits of Recycling E-Waste
• Conserves natural resources by recovering valuable materials
• Reduces energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions
• Prevents environmental pollution and soil and water contamination
• Protects human health by safely managing toxic substances
• Saves landfill space by diverting electronic waste from landfills
• Helps communities through reuse and donation of refurbished electronics
